A new study shows Nexium, a stomach-protecting heartburn medication, may lead to heart attack, but patients taking the drug should be aware that they may be at risk for heart attack and stroke if they have heart disease.
The study, which was reported in the journal Heart, Lung and Vascular, was funded by AstraZeneca. Nexium was prescribed to heart disease sufferers in New Brunswick, New Jersey, since 1998.
Nexium is the most commonly prescribed heartburn medication in New Jersey.
It is the only prescription heartburn drug in New Jersey that has not been approved by the FDA for use in the treatment of heart disease.
